When my turn to perform arrived, I was asked to play my accursed Vieuxtemps concerto. Luckily, to my surprise, it went off well with all the rapid passages in tempo. Kneisel listened quietly, turning pages but making no comment, which was highly unusual. Mr. Loeffler seemed pleased by my efforts and spoke kindly and encouragingly to me. " In the mid 1930S, the great Jascha Heifetz confirmed the traditional Russian solution of staccato velocity. He invited me to play chamber music at his summer home in Balboa, California.

However, I worked harder than ever to learn as much as possible in the allotted time. In any event, I never had two bad lessons in a row; the next was always better, as I learned at someone else's lesson what Kneisel wanted. My first bitterly cold New York winter offered a new problem-icy fingers. My colleagues and I soon found the Institute's warm basement an ideal place to warm up both fingers and instruments before braving Kneisel's sarcastic wit. I arrived a half-hour early to be sure I could play with some semblance of agility.

Our audition seemed to please Pantages, as he immediately accepted us for a two-week trial engagement. We evidently made a good impression, for that tour was extended to six months and covered his entire circuit. I have sometimes wondered why we were kept on this tour for such a long time. For the last number of our act I played a Brahms Hungarian Dance and attempted to lead the pit orchestra by waving my violin up and down in a tempo that suited Rozika. Occasionally the orchestra took a slower tempo, ignoring me and the floundering dancer, whose leaps and jumps required a minimum speed to execute.
