This type of event may well involve a series of presentations. Further detail on such events is provided by Lewis, Svinicki and Stice (1989). • Short workshop. Usually two or three hours in length, and usually having some element of work by participants such as small-group activities, problem solving, hands-on activities or other forms of engagement. Workshops are usually limited in number of participants (10–30) and are usually held in a room in which participants may easily form small groups.

It is this focus on development objectives that helps to pave the way for actual development activities. However, it is also essential to emphasize within the HE context that this whole process of identifying and meeting needs also incorporates a negotiation with those concerned about how and when to work on this development activity, what achievable outcomes can be identified, what steps of learning, time and place could be put in place, and so on. Tailoring development needs analyses to those involved is essential so that the right kind of development is carried out and impacts on practice.

It is important for any learning event to be grounded in good learning theory and corresponding methodology (see Jarvis, Holford and Griffin, 1998, for a helpful review of a wide range of learning theories and practices). Example: Workshop on Experiential Learning In designing a workshop on experiential learning, it is very useful to consider using the Kolb Experiential Learning model (see Jones, 1988; Kolb, 1984; and also Chapter 12 for a description of this model) as the curriculum design model for the workshop.
