Half the windows in town were broken, and doors along Brock Street were blown open by the force of the blast. The explosion literally knocked the exhausted firefighters off their feet. Paralysed by the shock of the blast, as well as the magnitude of the disaster, the townspeople were slow to react. The flames were fanned by the gale, and the fire gained new vigour, racing westward, and consuming all the buildings along the market. The fire was finally subdued near dawn just before it engulfed the Commercial Bank building.
