Example text

So God’s existence as the creative cause of all things is a truth of reason, but God’s being as Trinity is a truth of faith. Yet a person Can We Talk? 19 of faith cannot stop here. She must also inquire as to whether the claim about the Trinity is irrational. In particular, she will want to have rebuttals for any particular arguments purporting to show that the Trinity is irrational. Christian theologians have attempted to do just that: to show that claims of the irrationality of faith do not stand up.

There is, for instance, the matter of falling short and failing to do what one should have done. This too is part of the Christian narrative: the business of “coming to yourself”2 and repenting of having done wrong and being turned around. So, in this example, it’s not only what “you” do as you pass by, but how, later, you reflect upon it and perhaps repent. And another element, besides recollection and repentance, is the implicit requirement of creativity. A magnificent feature of Jesus’ commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves is that it is a commandment we can never be finished with.

This happens not so much because we take on the rules we find in the Bible—for just taking on rules is an exterior thing, it doesn’t really shape us—but because we enter the world of the Bible or, perhaps better, the world of the Bible enters into our world and we start living as characters in a double-narrative, the narrative written in the Bible and the narrative being written as we live our own lives. That, in short, is the principal point about narrative ethics: rather than a matter of obeying commandments, ethics is the effort to shape our lives as we endeavor to live according to the story that we purport to live by.
