So I was to sail with a Hungarian for a Second Officer. Among most Austrians of my generation our Hungarian partners (usually referred to in private as “the Magyar scum”) were regarded with at least a certain mistrust as being engaged in a gigantic conspiracy to run the entire Monarchy in their own interests. Now it appeared that I was to have one of them as my second in command. It must be said though that in appearance at least, Fregattenleutnant Meszáros certainly did not conform to the usual stereotype of the descendants of Arpád and his Central Asian marauders.

I made my way down to the breakwater, by now thoroughly depressed. Yes, there she was, half hidden by a battery-charging lighter. Hardly an impressive-looking vessel, I thought, even when one made due allowance for the fact that most of her was underwater. Well, I thought to myself, feeling rather like one about to mount a 47 A Sailor of Austria particularly vicious and unpredictable horse, there’s no sense in delaying things: you had the choice of a nice boring job aboard a battleship and you chose this instead.
