So I think that did hold me back. Partly I don’t regret going there because it has toughened me up. I can deal with situations. It was more about survival, that school. If I had not been there, people could quite easily walk all over me. I had to stick up for myself. I had to defend myself. But I am not confrontational. I think it’s because there was so much confrontation in the school and that was something I hated. There were quite a lot of fights and that was horrible. I suppose that is something that I have learned: it is not something I want to be like.

Such as us, workingclass people, we never went abroad. We went down to the east coast for the weekend or for a week. So I thought to myself, ‘Well, why wrap myself up with this when I am never going to use it? I am probably never even going to meet a French 30 LIVING WITH DIFFERENCE person. ’ So that’s what I did. I came away from school with quite good results but it was due to getting books out and studying things for myself, catching up on things that I didn’t understand in class, from when I got home till 10 o’clock at night, just to get things sorted out.

So] I begin to seek out ways in which the arts, in particular, can release imagination to open new perspectives, to identify alternatives . . [that] keep human beings and their cultures alive. It is vital to recognize the complexity of human beings: partly in order to recognize the world as it is; partly because the idealized smooth discourse that drowns out other voices is one that reflects the lived realities of the more powerful, richer and privileged members of a society. Other less powerful, less privileged people find it hard to talk to each other over their loud voices.
